A dedicated shorebird roost has been designated on the southern end of the Esplanade at Toorbul, Queensland. Entry onto the roosting site is forbidden. Best on a rising high tide when thousands of migratory shorebirds visit.

The Esplanade at Toorbul. Take the Toorbul turnoff from the Sunshine Coast Motorway.

Best on a rising high tide when birds are forced to come closer to the Esplanade.


[top]Key species

Migratory regulars include Bar-tailed and Black-tailed Godwits, Eastern Curlew, Whimbrel, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, Grey-tailed Tattler, Red-necked Stint, Great Knot, Less common species such as Broad-billed Sandpiper, Sanderling, Pectoral Sandpiper and others have been recorded.

Gull-billed and Crested Terns, Pied and sometimes Sooty Oystercatcher are regular. Herons and Egrets, Whistling-ducks, Buff-banded Rails also seen. Great for Sacred Kingfishers. Bee-eaters, Night Herons ( roost opposite the shorebird roost on private property), Pelicans and Gulls. Brolgas are seen regularly on the road into Toorbul.
