Lake Cargelligo Sewage Treatment Works

The permanent water bodies that make up the evaporation ponds of the lake Cargelligo sewage treatment works are a haven for both waterbirds and dry country birds. Unlike many other STW, visitors are welcome to visit the evaporation ponds.

[top]Getting there

Lake Cargelligo sewage treatment works is about 1 km south of the town. From the town travel south along Canada Street which changes its name to the Condobolin Rd. Access is along a dirt road that turns south off the Condobolin Road. See the attached mud map for details.
Lake Cargelligo is approximately 600km west of Sydney.

Because of the permanent water at the sewage works it could be worth a visit at any time of year.


The nearby town has a supermarket, Tourist information, picnic areas, petrol stations, motel and a camping ground.
There is a permanent bird hide located near the entrance.

  • Black-winged Stilt
  • Red-rumped Parrot
  • White-winged Fairy-wren
  • Australian Reed Warbler, Little Grassbird

The lake on the eastern side of the town is worth exploring for waders and waterbirds.
Lake Cargelligo is a great base from which to explore the districts well known birding/photographic locations. These in include the lake itself, the sewage works, Chat Alley and the Round Hill and Nombinnie Nature Reserves.
