Default New "rank" names, have your say

You will have noticed that users have been given rank names determined by their number of posts such as "senior member", "new member" etc etc.
These ranks are pretty much default names and we would like to change them to something more fitting to the theme of the site.
We would love to hear some of your suggestions as to what we should go with or maybe you have your own idea.
Perhaps you think we should not have ranks at all, if so let us know this as well.
We will run a poll next week to decide so keep your eyes open

Here are some of the current ideas for rank names:-

    * Ranks named after stages in a birds life...for example..."fledgling", "juvenile", "immature", "1st adult plumage" etc etc

    * Ranks named after birds wingspans...for example..."Wingspan: Wren", "Wingspan:Robin", "Wingspan:Quail"....all the way up to Albatross

We would love your feedback in helping to change the site in little ways like this so let us know what you think.

Stages of a birds life is a good one.

Are you able to base these on length of membership (time) as opposed to posts?

And perhaps make them customisable so we can choose our own? These can be quite quirky and interesting.

I think these names, other than "administrator" are pointless if it's governed by post count. Number of posts does not equal experience/expertise.

It's probably not as pertinent on this site (I'm a member of reptile keeping sites) but I've seen extremely poor keeping advice given to beginners/new members by "senior"/ "wingspan:wedgetail" members.

    Just a thought!

Otherwise, i think the new site format looks great. Hopefully I'll have some time to get around to posting a bit more rather than just lurking in the shadows.

I think it should be determined by number of posts rather than time as a member. After all, the idea of the ranks is to encourage contribution (in the form of posts).
They would not be customisable (by members) but I thought the wingspan one would be good because there are loads (literally hundreds) of options. Perhaps we could have a random number of posts to denote a change. For instance, you might make your 1467th post and all of a sudden you are a Harrier" instead of a Silver Gull. That would make things interesting I think.

Thats right Henry, the ranks are just a bit of fun and not a reference to the members experience or skill level in any way.

I agree, which is why I'm all for making the usertitles more light-hearted and I favour the stages of a bird's life.

    My pick is life-stages too.

No, the titles are adjusted based on post count only.

Yes we can make them user editable, will we? Maybe when a member has reached a certain usertitle level!

I prefer the wingspan option because there are so many different titles we could have (from weebill all the way to albatross).

Also, with the "life stages" one....it looks like I am going to be one very ugly, very wrinkly old bird (judging by my current post level)

But I wouldn't want to be an Albatross! I'd be happy to remain a Weebill!

If it were life stages, you'd be a Archaeopteryx , Paul

I'll look forward to this poll! Personally I'd prefer wingspans too

We'll put an option to keep the rank titles as they appear now in the poll Mike so feel free to vote for that if you like. We want everyone to have a say

I reckon it's a good idea; keeps some fun in the forum which is what it is all about really. I like the wingspan option personally, but am not fussed either way
