Default Zoom Lenses for Nikon cameras

I currently have a Nikon D90 camera that I run a Sigma 170mm - 500mm zoom lens on and a Nikon 7000 that I want to buy a zoom for as well.
The D90 the wife will be using and I the 7000. I say this because the Sigma lens is on the end of her handling ability because of its weight and size.
We do a heap of bush walking and take all our bird photos hand holding the cameras never using a tripod.
Most of our photos we take at the full extent of the 500mm zoom and I loose some sharpness because of that.
I have been looking at alternative lenses to run on either camera and would like some suggestions.
    I've considered the Nikon 80 - 400VR and the Sigma 50 - 150.
What I would like to know are either better than what I have already or are there other lenses that I should consider.
My budget is limited to a couple of grand.

Go for the 80-400mm Greg...I think they make a 200-400mm as well which might be a good option. Stick with Nikon I reckon too.

The 200-400mm will be out of your budget I assume (worth several grand!), but the 80-400mm should work well for your style of shooting. Maybe consider a good monopod?

    Sigma 120-300 2.8

Sure it's 300mm, but it's 300mm at 2.8, meaning you can use TCs.
    And it's stupidly sharp.

If you could stretch a bit this would be a great lens it includes a 1.4x and a 2x:

if you could handle manual focus this would be a real bargain:

Other than that, a 300mm f4 such as this one plus a 1.4x would be very good:

The 80-400 does not have a stellar reputation, it's pretty good but the AF is a bit slow and image quality a tad below top shelf from all reports I've seen. The image quality from the above lenses is pretty much as good as it gets. If you are shooting birds you are going to be at max zoom as you've already discovered.

    Hi Greg,
I'm a fellow Nikon user (there is not many of us on this forum). By all reporst the D7000 looks like an awesome camera! I have used the Nikkor 300mm f4 and a 1.4xTC for some time its a great set-up, image quailty is good and it is very light and not too expensive. I have also heard bad things about the 80-400mm. The 300mm f4 + 1.4TC gets you to 420mm with better image quality, faster auto-focus at the same (if not cheaper) price.

    Thanks for your thoughts everyone.
I'm going down to Melbourne on the weekend and will get the camera shops to set up the suggested lenses on a D7000 and have a look.
The 300mm f4 Nikon lens with the 1.4 TC sounds an interesting set up especially if it gets rid of slow AF issue and if it doesn't have the soft focus at full zoom.
