Default Is there a General Discussion forum?

    Hi all,

Apologies if this is the wrong place. I was looking for the General Discussion forum...

I'm new to this site, but so far it looks like a good place to hang out on the Interent.

Briefly, I'm an Aussie, living in Japan. However with all the dramas unfolding over here I'm planning on returning to Australia. Hence why I found this forum. Anyway I won't be back in Australia for another 6 weeks or so. Relocating is a major hassle.

Anyway, A quick question. I see that you have a forum for Non-Australian birds which sounds like me for a few more weeks. Also, there is a forum for Bird Identification. I'm relatively new to birding and photographing them so I might need to make use of such a forum. Is it allowed or appropriate to post birds for ID that are not photographed in Australia in that forum?

G'day Steve, welcome to the site. You've got lots of great birds over your way. With the migratory shorebirds just starting to appear over there now you'll really start to get lots of great opportunites for images before you head home.

    Gday Stephen,

Feel free to post some overseas birds for identification. I think some of the bird nerds on here will love the challenge and have fun dusting off their overseas field guides. Enjoy the site.....and stay safe over there.

    Hi Steve and welcome!
Like Paul said, feel free to post some in the ID forum. I don't think we will be the best group to help out but we'll certainly give it a go
Hope all goes well with the relocation.
    Cheers, Dave

    Thanks for the welcome guys.

I'll post a couple of shots for help with ID soon.

However, I just received my English copy of Windows 7 so I will be off line for a few days while I do computer upgrade.

Mark, I would love to capture some shore birds, but I live in Landlocked Saitama and with the nuclear power plant off line, the shortage of power is playing havoc with the electric train system so getting to the beach is a bit of a challenge. However I do live a 20min bike ride from a bird sanctuary that I plan to visit early tomorrow morning, weather permitting. I hope to capture something worthy of posting.

Hi Stephen. Welcome to the forum. I spent almost the whole of last year living in Japan (as a one off thing) and did a fair bit of birding then. I too, also lived in Saitama (with my grandparents), fancy that! When I was there I did a lot of birding/photography at a place called Sanbanze, a small little beach on Tokyo Bay near Funabashi. I can highly recommend it if you have a chance (and haven't already been there). Like I said, I spent the whole year there and did a lot of birding there, so I am fairly familiar with the birds there and should be able to help you out with nearly all the birds you are likely to see around Tokyo or northern Japan in particular. Just post away to the ID forum! Look forward to seeing some of your shots! If you trawl back through some of the previous posts in the World Birds forum you might see some of the shots that I posted from last year in Japan.
    Cheers

I suppose the 'Off Topic' forum could also be known as the General Discussion forum..

I had thought that, but there's general discussion, and then there's general discussion about birds. For example, I might want to talk about the latest movie that just came out or current world issues etc which fits the current off-topic forum. But I feel that we need a general bird discussion forum, I know we have locations and sightings and ID and that other one that I can never for the life of me remember the name of. But for example, I made a rosella nest box over the weekend and I put it up in our gum tree today. It's bird related, but it doesn't fit in any of the current bird-topic forums. Not that it really matters, I can post it in our off-topic forum, but it just seems out of place to me there, because it's not... you know, off-topic.

    Anyway, enough rambling from me

Just a tip on your nesting box Bec, make sure the hole is only 50 mil in diameter, that way the bigger parrots can't get in. Our breeding pair have had 54 babies in this nesting box....
The voices in my head may not be real, but they come up with some great ideas..

Thanks for the tip, though it's already in the tree :P Great looking nestbox you have there (better than mine:P), I hope mine is even half as successful! I have a book on nest boxes which recommended the size for the hole at 65mm, and another listed 70mm. I think mine is just a tad under 65 so I think I should be fine. I think the next largest parrot we get here is the galahs, and from what I'm just reading they need a hole around 100mm+, the chubby buggers :P But I'm really not fussed, rosellas, lorikeets, red-rumps (would be awesome), I don't care. I just hope it gets used. Was watching it constantly after I put it up today, but no attention yet. The rosellas frequent the tree it's in, so hopefully it's not too long before they notice it.

I didn't really think of the Off Topic forum since it's well... off topic. However after looking in the Off Topic forum I can see that the definition of off topic is pretty loose in this community. I imagined off topic to be things that are not in any way related to birds or photography.

Like Bec says, I think there is room for a General Discussion forum for stuff that is about birds or photos but doesn't quite fit into one of the other more specialised forums, hence my confusion.
