    I like this paragraph...

Canon will develop a new 200-400mm f/4 telephoto zoom with a built-in 1.4x extender that pushes the focal range up to 280-560mm, the company has revealed.
It will be interesting to see what IQ is like at the 560 end. Can't wait for it to come out and see what the reviewers have to say.

Damn about bloody time HOW MUCH 8-) Not sure on the built in tc though how would this work my main concern would be if you want to shoot at 400 what happens all that extra glass just moves out of the way.........

Since it is a zoom I'm not sure what the IQ will be like with a 1.4x, although given their recent advancements and releases I dare say it would be pretty good. I'll take a stab and say the price will be around 5500-7000 AUD 8-)

I don't think there would be much change out of $7K for one, it could even be a bit more. Nikon's equivalent is around $7.5K, so that would be the mark.

Personally, it would be an absolutely fantastic pelagic lens, although I think it would be too short for a normal birding lens. You'd get full auto-focus at 560mm with the 1.4x, but the 500mm with the 1.4x gives you the same at 700mm.

It doesn't make the choice any easier

yes I was thinking 8k at least, it's a dual purpose lens really like the look of the prototype though, the bulbous peice towards the rear may indicate the actual tc does roll in and out

I guess lots of people will be waiting in anticipation when Canon finally reveals the price. One thing I appreciate with Canon is their super telephotos are generally cheaper than the Nikon counterparts.

This has got to be the absolute ideal birding lens for reach and versatility. 200-400 f4, and 400-560 f5.6 all in one lens, without having to remove the lens to add the TC will reduce dust, and the TC should be perfectly calibrated to the lens, so there should be barely any IQ degradation for the extra reach. From what I've read, Mikey is right about the TC moving physically out of the way, apparently this is what happens in canon's television lens, which have apparently had this in0built TC system for years. Looks amazing

Pricewise, I reckon if it's below $9000 Aus , I'd be surprised  . Probably $7500 for US, and for some reason, Australia always seems to have a large price markup, cause we're on the edge of the world

I must admit that i'm excited by the weight of the new 500 and 600mm f4s. The new 600mm f4 is only 50g heavier than my 500!

Considering the US prices for new 500 and 600 are said to be around $9500 and $11,990 respectively, meaning in Oz they would probably be around $12,000 and $14-15,000. I cannot see the 200-400 be anything less than 10k AUD based on the above assumptions.

What do you mean? You just shoot at 400mm! If you've got the TC disengaged, you'll get 400mm at f/4
If you've got the TC engaged, you'll get 560mm at f/5.6

If you're in TC mode, flick the switch, that's all.

    That'll be Canon's MSRP/RRP

Actual retail won't stay there for long. The original 500 and 600 were announced at 9-10K USD I believe. I bought my 500 for £3,500, so a lot cheaper.
