Default WEEKLY THEME GALLERY 7/12/10 "PHOTOTWITCH"

Quite a response to last weeks theme, well done filling all those requests everyone
This week we celebrate the second annual BirdingOz Phototwitch Was there a species you did'nt expect to see on your quest, did you get a shot of something rare or perhaps you just got a great image of a common bird that you would normally walk past.
Sorry to those who did'nt get to participate but if you have a shot from last years event then that is also eligible for inclusion.
Please do not reveal your total yet!!

Here is a shot (pretty horrible) of a bird I definitely did not expect to see, it was a new bird for me so I was pretty happy just to see it.

    Common Sandpiper (Tringa hypoleucos)

Here's another shot (also pretty dodgy) of a bird I wasn't expecting to see either. Not only that, but once again I didn't even realise I'd photographed it until I got home and thought, that aint a Pipit! At least it was an extra, surprise tick for the twitch.

Evil Pelican Didn't notice the blood dripping out of his mouth until I got home
Note: it was not injured, just feeding off the fish guts chucked out by fishermen at Longy

The first bird of our Phototwitch. We couldn't resist starting with this guy perched so beautifully on a little waterhole on the side of the highway!

A highlight of the day was Grant spotting these White-throated Needletails flying low while we were driving. .....Another stop on the side of the road!
Shame about the light but its the best Needletail image i have so far!

I finished my PhotoTwitch at the Cataract Dam picnic area late in the afternoon. I was listening to the distant creaky cries of what I think were Gang Gang Cockatoos. I waited a while quietly to see if they would come closer but alas they did not. I was about to pack up and out of the blue this female Satin Bowerbird drops in not far and starts to scavenge from the picnic tables. I did get closer shots than this but I don't like the setting of a wild bird on a table, it's too unnatural. I sure was happy I waited around and goes to show you never know what can happen.

I was pretty happy to get some photos of this Australasian Shoveler on the PhotoTwitch. I usually find these really wary, but this one just cruised on by and I got some nice full frame images of her. For some reason though, I preferred this image with a bit of background in it.

I was pleasantly surprised to find a pair of Black-necked Storks at a small dam in the Lockyer Valley, they were nowhere to be found during my practice run the week before.

One of the least common birds we saw on the PhotoTwitch was this Blue-billed Duck.
