Default WEEKLY THEME GALLERY 21/11/10 "CAPTIVE BIRDS"

This week is all about captive birds. As long as they are Australian birds, anything is up for inclusion. That includes pets.
Also, a reminder that next Sunday night will be the "Online BirdingOz Party". So, from 7pm (eastern daylight savings time) jump on and join us to try and beat the record of the most people online at one time

This party animal was taking a walk at a local park the other morning with its owner. It was screaming out to all the other cockies in the area and taunting them to come down and talk. Apparently the wild cockatoos are quite interested in this pet bird and they all flock around...that is until the pet cocky speaks, in English...and then they all take off as fast as they can

Ah alas - I have one serious bogey bird and one of the very few SEQ birds ive yet to see in the wild ( let alone photograph!) - so for me this is as good as it gets with this species - a Superb Fruit-dove in captivity - this the female!!!!

    Taken a few years ago.

Despite a number of visits to NQ and my own region Ive yet to sight one of these! Tragic!

    cheers

This one is from a wildlife park, but on an open lake. I presume it's a rehab bird, but I'm unsure if it was capable of, or willing, to fly off.

Same location and situation as above, though I'm pretty certain this one was more of a freeloader than a rehab bird lol. It seemed pretty active hunting around the lake but would come ashore to be fed also.

Scared the crap out of me when I was faced the other way and it let rip with its racket (only way to describe its call) in my ear lol.

Didn't think I had any 'captive' but had forgotten a trip to the Billabong Sanctuary just south of Townsville back in '06.

    Rose-crowned Fruit Dove (Ptilinopus regina)
All the photos I have of birds in the wild are ventral views...This singing/vocalising male was photographed at the walk in avairy in Port Douglas, better angle (could still be better)
