Default 40D died of unknown cause

Just had to send my 40D to the hospital in Sydney. Went to use it on Sunday to photograph a family of Frogmouths and it didn't work. No power going to the camera at all. Batteries are all good and fully charged, took the lens off, replaced the backup battery....nothing.

Hoping they get it back to me before my trip west in 3 weeks but if not I have a saviour (Dan)

Anyone else experienced this phenomena? Apparently is not uncommon.

I had an issue on Saturday where the camera was set to Av mode, but for 6 shots it over-exposed everything quite considerably!!

Have had four or five mini deaths in past year. seems usually to be triggered by trying to focus at minimum distance. Nothing works. though display doesn't die. Taking battery out and reinserting it has always kicked things back into life. So far!

    Hi Lucky,
Unfortunately it isn't & the disposition to fail in this way seems very specific to the 40D - My wifes camera did the same thing you describe mid trip abroad two years ago
It turned out to be a mirror mechanism failure.
Did you get an error message at all beforehand?

No errors at all prior to the event. The camera just wouldn't turn on. No LCD display not nothing. As if it didn't have a battery in it (which it did)

My very first 40D did the same thing, 4 out 5 photos horribly overexposed straight out of the box, sent it back right away and the replacement has never missed a beat.
