Default WEEKLY THEME GALLERY 1/8/10 "ARTISTIC/INTERESTING LIGHT"

The galleries have been getting bigger and better over the last few weeks so I thought I'd try and stump you all with this weeks theme. Its all about unusual lighting and artistic images. Something that may not come naturally to everyone but worth thinking about for sure.
Not every shot has to be perfectly lit for it to be a winner in my book so have a look through your files and see what you come up with.
Back lit, side lit, rim lit or any shot that has an artistic feel to it is up for inclusion. Give us a little write up on how the shot was taken etc as well if you can
Look forward to seeing the contributions Paul

    Back lit Spoonbill in flight

    Yellow billed Spoonbill (Platalea flavipes)

Back lit shots can work particularly well with lighter birds that allow the light to shine through their wings. This Spoonbill took off with the sun behind it on a cloudy day at the WTP west of Melbourne.

Back lit Australian Grebe (Tachybaptus novaehollandiae)

The original image at the metered exposure did'nt look like anything special when I took this shot but when under exposed on conversion the rim lighting made for an interesting shot in my opinion

Nearly did not stop as this guy was on the wrong side of the road, strongly backlit, but i did as he was close and I'm glad I did as I think the result is not too bad.

This was taken a while ago now near Peter Faust Dam which is the source of the local drinking water supply. Was driving back from the Dam when I noticed this fellow perched up on a fence post. It was late afternoon and a bit cloudy, so the BG sky was what lured me in to taking the shot more than anything. I tried to expose as much as I could for the sky and then lighten the coucal a little bit; but not to the point where it became too unnatural.

This isnt a good example of this week's theme, but I was never good at art back in school - the sciences, maths, english, sports, etc were more my go Therefore my photography tends to not be very creative!

I think this is different, as I got this wren in really harsh light and the background was all grey. Hope it fits the theme.

This is a photo taken of some Black Winged Stilts on the lagoon on the east side of the Mangrove Boardwalk Wynnum Brisbane at site I picked up off David Taylor site when I was up Brisbane last June.
As I was on the South side of the Lake and its winter time I had to shoot into the light and the Stilts were blending in with the old trees in the lake and I thought it would look arty.

I managed to find one image that corresponded with the theme of light, and, the seemingly popular theme of backlighting. Up until the beginning of this year, I probably didn't really use the best light available (ie the early morning/late afternoon light) enough if not at all. Here, I used some fill-flash to help bring out the honeyeater a bit.

Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo coming into land, backlit by the late afternoon sun (5.44pm). I had been taking shots of a pair of young Black Necked Storks when I noticed these guys coming in, most of the shots went into the bin, but I liked this one.

I posted this one in the BOP thread, I had blurred the backgroud on that shot and softened the hi-lites somewhat, but I think I prefer this shot with background a little noisy, but with the rim/hi-lites stronger.
