    Default New lense on order

I finally after much umming and arring decided on getting the Canon 300mm F4L IS + 1.4 TC.

I decided on this setup over the 100-400mm of the images I saw of both, the 300 + TC seemed just a bit sharper, and if I take the TC off, I have a great little 300mm F4 prime lense.

The only problem is that I can't use it until Feb 28.

Once I get it I intend to head straight to my favourite birding location as soon as I get the lense to see how it goes. So I've posted a fun little poll for people to try and guess which bird will be my first posted bird with the new lense.

Good on you Mark! Bet you can't wait! I used that combo for years before i got the 500mm and still use it if weight is an issue and on pelagics.
The 300 by itself is pin sharp and can focus down to 1.5m which can come in handy for sure!
How come you can't use it til the 28th??
    Congrats mate!
PS - sorry for being a pedant, but "lens" doesn't have an extra E on the end
    Cheers, Dave

I get it as a b/day present, and seeing as there is no 29th for me to have birthday this year I get it on the 28th instead.

You're a 29th Feb person?? Wow. My old class teacher was a 29th Feb person as well. Oh well, have fun with that lens! I got its big brother, the 300 f2.8, and although they are not exactly the same, I think you will love the 1.4X combo. The perfect length, I reckon, and you still get great quality (with the 2.8, at least, and I suspect with the f4 as well). Suprisingly, I find the 2.8 gives me more versatility than my old Bigma zoom (50-500mm). Have fun!

Congrats Mark. It was one that I considered and if I was only going to use it for birds it would have been perfect. My second passion is aircraft / flying so I needed the versatility of the zoom for shooting at airshows. Can't wait to see your first shot.

You should have fun with it Mark, it's a little short on the 1.3x crop 1DMkiin I have but you have more reach with a 1.6x crop camera. It's good and sharp even with the tele converter and wide open too and also makes a great dragonfly lens with a 25mm ext tube on it.

I get the new lens tomorrow morning, a day early, so I can take advantage of the favourable early morning tide.

The weather looks good, so I think there is a 90% chance that my first posted shot will be off a wader, and more than likely it'll be of a Stint. But who knows what tomorrow may bring, it may just as likely be a Gull!
