Ok Guys, I need a good external flash for my Canon 40D what do you recommend?

I do a fair bit in the bush and night time photography also, I have no clue on what is good or not.

So any advice would be fantastic

    Thanks

You need the Canon 430 EX speedlite and a "better beamer" flash extender. The 430EX is easy to use and not as bulky as the next model up.
Better beamer can be bought from the U.S. for about $50. Good luck.

I have always owned the Canon 580EX models as i need the greater output etc. Better beamer is great if you only use a long lens but doesn't help you if you want a more powerful flash with wider angle (less than 300mm). Having said that I think Paul is right - I don't think you would need the extra power/cost of the 580 so the 430 sounds like a good option.
To be honest I often think the BB is overkill and you might find you don't even need it. Also in the sun in the dry bush it is quite seriously a fire hazard if you are stationary for too long. (The front of my flash has the melted burn marks on it to prove it!)

    So does mine David
I reckon the Better beamer is fantastic. I have had good results with it from over 15mtrs away from the subject.
Setting it up always shits me but it is worth it most of the time

    Thanks heaps guys,

It turns out my father had just upgraded from at 430 EX to the next model up. So he is going to give me the 430. Gotta love him. I have purchased a Better Beamer to use when i am in the Iron range cause it is so dark in there.

    Thanks again
