Default WEEKLY THEME GALLERY 27/1/12 "CAPITALISE ON THE COMMON"

This week I'd love to see some common birds from your area. With the common birds its often a plus if you can capture them in an uncommon situation.

Bit of and oldie. One of the Cuckoo Shrikes that came to feed on the small figs in the tree across the road late summer last year. They come every year and the young ones seem to allow me to get closer. I am waiting for their arrival this year.

ID:	15580I agree with Paul where you need to show the common bird doing something of interest to lift it from the pack.I also believe and something I am conscious of is to try and catch the bird in a scene that has a degree of beauty or some element like a colour that turns the image into a photograph with a bird apart from just a plain old bird photograph. For some reason we tend to think that the photo of a rare or exotic bird is better just because it is rare etc.Unfortunately all the effort, expense and expertise in catching that subject is lost to the general public if the shot is not pleasing to view,no matter how rare.Dont forget to shoot the common and make great, pleasing images because I reckon at the end of the day it's all about the feel and the mood of the image.Enough dribble for now.

One of my first images with my Sony A300. I was wandering alongside the creek when this little guy flew down on this stick looking for insects.
